Facilitating Improved Stakeholder Access to relevant information on Ghana’s Emerging Petroleum Industry (SATRIPI)

(Educating and Sensitizing Stakeholders on the Likely Impacts of the Emerging Petroleum Industry)

OVERALL OBJECTIVE
To educate and sensitize the citizenry of the Western Region (especially those in the frontier communities) and secondary and tertiary education students nationwide on the likely benefits and associated impacts of the emerging petroleum industry so as to effectively manage their expectations as well as equipping them to push for better public accountability from the managers of petroleum revenues.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

  • To introduce and disseminate the OGSN Guide and Glossary to the frontline districts, municipality and Metropolis of Jomoro, Ellembele, Nzema East, Ahanta West, Shama and Sekondi-Takoradi as well as selected Senior High Secondary Schools and Tertiary Institutions in all the ten regions of Ghana;
  • Mobilize and disseminate timely, accurate, relevant and easy-to-understand information on the nature and characteristics of the fledgling petroleum industry and how the industry is expected to impact on the lives of the people of the Western Region in particular and the economy of Ghana in general;
  • Embark on a sustained public education and awareness-raising campaign on the likely developmental impacts of the emerging petroleum industry with the intention of shaping exaggerated public expectations to their realistic levels;
  • Build Capacity of CSO networks and coalitions in the Western Region to sustain the educational campaign after the project

KEY PROJECT ACTIVITIES

  • Reprinting of copies of Guide and Glossary;
  • Development and printing of 1-2 page leaflets, posters, etc using extracts from salient portions of the Guide;
  • Distribution of educational materials to identifiable groups and institutions nationwide;
  • Organisation of town hall-type meetings/durbars in each of the six DMMAs;
  • Collaborate with local radio and TV stations to design regular programmes that dedicate their space to sharing information on issues of good governance in the petroleum sector
  • Enhancement of the capacity of CSO/NGO Networks/Coalitions in the Western Region
  • Monitoring and Evaluating impacts of educational campaigns

OUTPUT

  • About 8,500 copies each of the guide and glossary have been widely disseminated in the six oil host districts of the Western Region and in SHS and Training Colleges nationwide
  • Workplace stickers and banners containing easy to understand information on the petroleum industry have been developed
  • English and local language (Fante) jingles containing stakeholder expectation management messages on Ghana’s emerging petroleum industry have been developed and are being aired on two radio stations – Skyy radio and Oman Fm
  • Development of a 13-episode radio soap opera on the Petroleum industry in Ghana
  • The capacity of the Community Environmental Monitoring and Advocacy Groups (CEMAGs) in the six oil districts have been enhanced to help sustain stakeholder education and sensitization
  • The expectations of more than 10 million Ghanaian has been managed on impacts of the petroleum industry directly through public educations campaigns and via radio and television broadcasts
