KITE LBG (originally called the Kumasi Institute of Technology, Energy and Environment – KITE) was incorporated on 20 November 1996 as a Company Limited by Guarantee under the Companies Code of Ghana (1963, Act 179).
In 2019, the KITE Executive Council passed a resolution to change the original name to its popular acronym KITE, which had, over time, gained strong professional, institutional, and public recognition. The decision to change the name was necessitated, largely by the fact that the organization had strategically moved the bulk of its operations to Accra rendering the geographical location – Kumasi – specified in the name a bit restrictive and not-applicable and partly because of the sheer length of the original name, which made branding difficult.
The suffix LBG (Limited by Guarantee) was added to the name pursuant to Section 21 (1 of the Companies Code, 2019 (Act 992) which mandates registered companies in Ghana to add specific suffixes at the end of their names to ensure easy identification of their legal status. The adoption of the name KITE LBG therefore provides a clearer and more accurate reflection of the organisation’s legal status, operational base, and broadened mandate within Ghana and across the West African sub-region.
KITE was established to address the critical intersection of technology, energy, and the environment within Ghana’s development process. Since its inception, the organisation has pursued this mandate through three enduring core objectives:
- To promote policy-oriented research on technology, energy, and the environment;
- To undertake training and disseminate information in the areas of technology, energy, and the environment;
- To provide project development, implementation, and consulting services relating to technology, energy, and the environment.
The deliberate focus on technology, energy, and the environment from the outset reflects KITE’s long-standing commitment to a nexus-based approach to sustainable development. Central to this approach is the Energy–Environment–Technology Nexus, which recognises the complex and dynamic interactions between energy production and consumption, environmental sustainability, and technological advancement. This nexus underscores the critical role of science, innovation, and enterprise in addressing climate change, enabling cleaner energy systems, improving efficiency, and supporting economic transformation while safeguarding ecological integrity. Nearly three decades after its establishment, this nexus has not only maintained its relevance but also become central to the global 2030 development agenda.
