Location: Nationwide
Client / Lead Funders: Agence Française de Développement (AFD) & European Union (EU) (via technical assistance)
Duration: From approx. 2020/2021 through initial phase (3-4 yrs), to 2025.
Project Overview:
SUNREF Ghana is a green-finance initiative developed by AFD under the global “SUNREF” label, in partnership with the EU and local Ghanaian banks (e.g., CalBank and GCB Bank PLC). The programme aims to mobilise private banks to finance renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) investments by businesses, organisations, households and to support Ghana’s transition to a lower-carbon economy.
KITE’s Role & Impact:
- Providing technical assistance (alongside Econoler) to local banks and financial institutions in structuring and assessing green investment opportunities under SUNREF Ghana.
- Supporting capacity building for participating banks and stakeholders (e.g., training bank staff in green credit line processes) as part of the technical assistance facility.
- Assisting in the awareness-raising and facilitation of project identification (for RE/EE investments) and the promotion of the SUNREF credit line among Ghanaian SMEs and households.
Outcome: So far, the programme has made significant strides in establishing a green financing market in Ghana: a credit line of approx. €30 million from AFD, technical assistance and grant support from the EU, partner banks offering competitive loans and grants (up to 10 %) for eligible RE/EE projects. It supports the uptake of renewable energy and energy efficiency by Ghanaian firms and households, contributing to energy security, competitiveness of businesses, and Ghana’s climate goals.
