Location: South Dayi District, Volta Region, Ghana
Client/Funder: Fondation Nexans
Duration: August 2025 – July 2026
Project Overview: KITE LBG is implementing the Sustainable Micro-Infrastructure for Livelihood Enhancement (SMILE) Project to improve agro-processing efficiency and rural livelihoods through decentralized renewable energy. The project deploys two solar-powered grain milling systems (4.4 kWp PV, 8 kWh battery) to enhance food security, reduce manual labor, and empower women and youth in South Dayi District.
KITE’s Role & Impact:
- Designed and implemented a solar-powered agro-processing model to promote productive use of energy (PUE).
- Conducted feasibility studies, community engagement, and training of 60 local technicians for system operation and maintenance.
- Partnered with Power World (Ghana) for system installation and Azimut360 (Spain) for QA/QC support.
- Facilitated partnerships with the South Dayi District Assembly and local cooperatives for land, mobilization, and sustainability.
- Integrated gender-responsive approaches to support women- and youth-led enterprises in agro-processing and small-scale industry.
Outcome: The SMILE Project directly benefits 1,200 rural residents annually (6,000 over the project period), creating sustainable livelihoods, improving access to affordable milling services, and strengthening local food systems. It advances multiple SDGs – notably SDGs 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, and 17 – by fostering clean energy access, gender equity, and economic inclusion.
